Qld: Golfer granted reprieve from payout

A businessman has been granted a temporary reprieve from paying a $2.6 million damage
bill over a golf shot that seriously injured another player.

MARK ROY SHANAHAN was playing in a charity golf game 10 years ago at Magnetic Island
Country Club off the coast from Townsville, when he accidentally hit GLENN THOMAS OLLIER
in the head with a ball.

Mr OLLIER suffered severe permanent brain damage and the Queensland Supreme Court awarded
him $2.6 million in damages.

The court found Mr SHANAHAN, who wasn't a regular golfer, was negligent in not looking
ahead before teeing off.

In April this year the Queensland Court of Appeal dismissed Mr SHANAHAN's appeal.

Today, Court of Appeal Justice GLEN WILLIAMS has agreed to a stay of the payment of
the damages bill pending a special leave application, which isn't due to be heard by the
High Court before next year.
